Meteors to be topic

CUMBERLAND – Southern Maine Astronomers will host a public meeting featuring Dr. Meers Oppenheim, associate professor at Boston University, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 19, at the Congregational Church, Cumberland Center.

Oppenheim will speak on the physics of meteors entering the atmosphere. There will be a star party after the program, weather permitting. For more information, visit www.southernmaineastronomers.org.

Heifer event

AUGUSTA – Heifer International has invited the public to a Constellation of Friendships; Heifer Maine Reaching Across the World and Celebrating Maine’s Immigrant Farming Program from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 21, at the Central Maine Power Conference Center, 83 Edison Drive.

There will be presentations, and Sudanese refreshments and beverages will be provided. Continuing education units are available for Maine educators.

Poets to meet

BREWER – The Maine Poets Society will meet on Saturday, May 20 at the Muddy Rudder, 5 South Main St. Registration and coffee will begin at 9:30 a.m. The meeting will end at approximately 3 p.m.

Guests are welcome. Members and guests are expected to pay a $6 registration fee and pay for their own noon meals.

The morning session will include a business meeting and the results of the morning poetry contest. The afternoon session will consist of the results of the afternoon contest and a “reading in the round.” Only members can participate in the contests, but guests are invited to share in the reading in the round.

Trail funding

AUGUSTA – The Maine Department of Conservation’s Bureau of Parks and Lands has announced a deadline of Nov. 9 for grant applications for construction and maintenance of recreational trails through the federally-funded Recreational Trails Program.

Applications must be postmarked by the Nov. 9 deadline to be considered. Maine has received more than $6 million since 1993 and has funded more than 350 trail projects.
