Avian flu topic of workshop

AUGUSTA – University of Maine Cooperative Extension and the Maine Compost Team will offer a workshop, “Avian Influenza Issues and Disposal Options,” from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday, June 2, at Jewett Hall, University of Maine.

The free workshop is to inform and prepare flock owners, producers and others regarding proper disposal methods for routine and catastrophic bird mortalities. The information is relevant for domestic and wild flocks and mortalities caused by avian influenza.

The workshop will feature speakers from the Maine Department of Agriculture, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and UMaine Cooperative Extension.

French immersion

WATERVILLE – Let’s Talk Language School in Waterville and the Commission Scolaire de la Beauce et Etchemin in St. Georges, Qubec, are offering a one-week French immersion program for adults in St. Georges, Qubec.

The program will run from June 24 to July 1. Participants will stay with host families and attend daily French classes. Excursions to Qubec City and local sites are included. The program is open to beginner and advanced French speakers.

Physicians’ session

NORTHEAST HARBOR – A special session on “Challenges Facing Maine Surgeons” will be held at the annual meeting of the Maine Chapter of the American College of Surgeons on Friday, June 2, at the Asticou Inn in Northeast Harbor. Trek Across Maine registration

AUGUSTA – On Friday, June 16, an expected 1,500 cyclists will set off from Sunday River Ski Resort in Newry for the American Lung Association of Maine’s 22nd annual Trek Across Maine – Sunday River to the Sea. Supported by more than 300 volunteers, this year’s cyclists will cover 180 miles over the three-day ride, culminating at Owls Head Transportation Museum on Sunday, June 18.

Coastal boating course planned

CASTINE – Maine Maritime Academy will hold “Boating on the Coast of Maine,” a hands-on course for high school students interested in learning sail, power boat and navigation skills. The five-day course is scheduled to take place June 25 to 30 at the college’s waterfront campus. The course is coeducational and participants must be age 15 to 17.

Hands-on experiences will include sailing, rowing, single and twin screw power boat handling, general seamanship and safety techniques, basic maintenance of marine diesel engines, navigation and ocean survival practices.

Participants of all experience levels are welcome and enrollment is limited. The course fee is set at $600 and includes tuition, lodging in the college’s residence hall and meals. AUGUSTA – Girl Scouts of Kennebec Council has elected the following community leaders to its board of directors:

Also elected to serve on the nominating committee were Kathleen Bouchard, King Middle School, and Gary O’Donnell, Wright Express.

The council provides programs for more than 10,000 girls, ages 5 to 17, and 3,000 adult volunteers in Androscoggin, Cumberland, Franklin, Kennebec, Knox, Lincoln, Oxford, Sagadahoc, Somerset and York counties.
