SOUTH PARIS – Greta M. Caldwell, 93, of South Paris died Thursday, May 18, at Market Square Health Care Center.

She was born in South Paris on March 9, 1913, the daughter of Henry and Dora Stevens Merrill. She graduated in 1931 from Paris High School, where she played basketball and played the violin in the orchestra.

She was employed at W. J. Wheeler as an insurance underwriter for 50 years, retiring in October 1981. She was a member of the Mothers Club, the Rebekahs, the Christmas Club, the Farm Bureau and Paris Cape Historical Society. She and her mother were the first mother and daughter to receive the Alumni of the Year Award from Paris Alumni Association.

She was an avid golfer and enjoyed spending time with her family.

She is survived by a daughter, Jane Twitchell and her husband, Terry, of Oxford; a son, John M. Caldwell of Effingham, N.H.; a sister, Helen Decato of South Paris; a brother, Ralph Merrill and his wife, Betty, of South Paris; five grandchildren, Laurie Caldwell of Effingham, N.H., Terri Carrier and her husband, Richard, of Effingham, N.H., Michael Twitchell and his wife, Rhonda, of Norway, Jeffrey Twitchell and his wife, Carol, of Otisfield, and Timothy Twitchell and his wife, Sacha, of Norway; seven great-grandchildren, Amy and Matthew Carrier, both of Effingham, N.H., Harrrison and Alexander Twitchell of Norway, and Adrianna, Karleigh and Greydin Twitchell, all of Otisfield; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; a baby sister, Nina; brothers, Clarence, Lawrence and Henry Merrill; and a nephew, Daniel Decato.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Medd and Greta’s “adopted” family at Market Square Health Care Center for all their caring and kindness shown to Mum.
