AUBURN – An equipment malfunction knocked out electricity to nearly 10,000 homes and businesses Sunday afternoon.

A spokesman for Central Maine Power said the outage was caused by a faulty air brake switch in the Deer Rips substation. It knocked out power to 9,968 CMP customers in and around Auburn beginning at 2:35 p.m. Sunday.

Crews had rerouted power to an estimated 3,200 homes by 3:10 p.m. and returned service to the rest of the city by 3:35 p.m.
