LEWISTON – Gas prices are high and so in interest in Commute Another Way Day, June 7, say organizers of the statewide event that promotes low-cost, fuel efficient and healthy modes of transportation to Maine businesses and commuters.

Organizers are encouraging commuters to register online as soon as possible, so they can be eligible for all of the event benefits this year, including free rides on public transit, participation in local commuter events and a chance to win prizes.

Meanwhile, organizers are expecting a healthy turnout for a day-long celebration that will include local events in Portland, South Portland, Skowhegan, Bangor, Augusta and Biddeford-Saco as well as free rides on CityLink in Lewiston-Auburn and other transit services throughout the state.

“It’s really at these local events that we are able to get the message out that Maine has many healthy, money-saving options for commuters,” said Carey Kish of the GO MAINE commuter assistance program.

This year’s event will reach more than 50,000 commuters with the message that carpooling, vanpooling, bicycling, walking and transit are easy ways for commuters to beat the high cost of gasoline.

There will be free rides on most major transit services, including METRO, the BAT, ZOOM, ShuttleBus, South Portland Bus Service, Casco Bay Lines, CityLink and the Downeaster.

Everyone who preregisters for the event will be eligible to win prizes, including an L.L.Bean bike created especially for commuting and tickets on the Downeaster.
