DETROIT (AP) – Jeremy Bonderman allowed two runs in 7 2-3 innings and Magglio Ordonez hit a three-run homer to lead the Detroit Tigers over the Boston Red Sox 6-2 Saturday night.
Bonderman (6-4) struck out six, walked two and gave up four hits to pick up his second win of the season at home. Fernando Rodney worked 1 1-3 innings for his seventh save in eighth chances.
Carlos Guillen hit a two-run drive and Marcus Thames added a solo shot for the Tigers.
Bonderman threw 29 pitches in the first inning, walked two and gave up Trot Nixon’s RBI double, then pulled it together after the rough start. He allowed just three more hits and retired 13 straight batters in the middle innings.
Alex Cora led off the eighth with a triple and scored on Coco Crisp’s groundout to pull Boston to 3-2. Bonderman got Mark Loretta to ground out before leaving the game. Rodney retired David Ortiz on a flyball to end the inning.
Tim Wakefield (4-7) struck out six in seven innings for the Red Sox. Manny Delcarmen got the first two outs of the eighth before leaving with runners on first and third. Julian Tavarez came in and yielded a three-run drive to Ordonez to make it 6-2.
Ordonez also singled in the fourth ahead of Guillen’s seventh home run of the season.
Thames hit his ninth home run in the second inning to tie it at 1. He also doubled in the seventh.
Notes: The start of the game was delayed 46 minutes by rain. … Saturday’s sellout (40,872) was the third this season at Comerica Park. … Umpire Charlie Reliford, scheduled to work at second base, left before the game to tend to a family matter. A three-man crew worked the game.
