WATERVILLE, (AP) – A Norridgewock man who was free on bail on a child sex charge was back in custody after he allegedly tried to abduct an 8-year-old girl from a Wal-Mart.

Richard Decca, 56, was arrested Saturday after he led the girl out of the store to a car in the parking lot while her mother, brother and sister were in the next aisle.

Wal-Mart security reported the missing child and locked down the store. Two men who heard the alert spotted the girl outside and escorted her to safety. She was uninjured and was reunited with her family.

Decca was being held on $100,000 bail on charges that included criminal restraint, assault and attempted unlawful sexual contact.

Decca gave police a false name at first, but did provide his correct Social Security number, police said.

When authorities at the county jail ran that number, they determined his true identity, the officer said.

Bearce said Decca was free on bail from a case in April in which he was charged with unlawful sexual contact with a 1-year-old girl in Waterville.

“This could have had a different outcome if he had gotten her into his car and left,” Bearce said.
