Strawberry Vinegar – This makes a delicious cool drink for summer combined with cracked ice in a glassful of water. Allow two tablespoonfuls to a glass. Small, inferior berries may be used. Over 4 quarts of the berries pour 3 quarts of white wine vinegar. Cover and let stand for three days, then strain. Add 1 quart of loaf sugar to each quart of the vinegar. Let it come to a boil, skim, bottle and cork tightly.

Graham Rolls – Miss Nellie Given, High St. One cup graham, one cup flour, one cup sour milk, one teaspoon cream of tartar, one teaspoon soda, a little salt, on egg, one-quarter cup sugar, one tablespoon melted butter. Mix the soda and cream of tartar with the flour. Beat the eggs, sugar and butter together, than stir in the milk; lastly the flour. Bake in hot gem pans.

50 Years Ago, 1956

Supt. Robert S. Ireland has been delegated by the Auburn Superintending School Committee to investigate removal of the old bell which came down in the fire which destroyed part of Edward Little High School some years ago. The bell has been in storage at property of Frank Greenleaf and must be removed.

School committee members felt the bell should be preserved and perhaps put in the lobby of a new school building. It was felt there is a lot of sentiment connected with the large bell which was rung for years after ELHS victories on various sports fields.

25 Years Ago, 1981

The shoe industry in Maine is far from the giant which it was a half century ago, but it still provides 17,000 jobs in the state. As a result, a White House task force recommendation that quotas on shoe imports from Taiwan and South Korea be ended is of special importance here.

The task force report arouses fears that President Ronald Reagan will end the quota system. That would deal a serious blow to the industry in Maine and the nation. The President has been advised that ending restrictions on the Asian shoes would demonstrate the commitment to free trade.
