TURNER – An Old Orchard Beach woman was hospitalized Friday after she fell asleep at the wheel and her vehicle crashed into two other cars on Route 4.

Police said 66-year-old Donna Jenkins, fell asleep while driving north on Route 4 at about 3 p.m., and that her car drifted into oncoming traffic.

Jenkins four-door sedan crashed into one vehicle and then another before coming to rest in the roadway, police said. The crash occurred near the intersection of routes 4 and 219.

The drivers and occupants of the other vehicle were not seriously hurt, police said. Their identities were not available Friday night.

Jenkins was taken by LifeFlight Helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Her condition was not available Friday night. Police described the woman’s injuries as serious, but said she was expected to survive.

The crash forced the closure of a section of Route 4 as emergency crews responded and Maine State Police began their investigation.

While police were investigating the crash, a state trooper clocked a passing motorist driving 93 mph north on Route 4. James Emerson, 46, of 357 Fairway Drive, Auburn, was arrested for criminal speeding and taken to the Androscoggin County Jail.
