HEBRON – Speed and alcohol may have been factors in a fatal crash on Route 124 on Friday, according to state police.

Scott Legere, 27, of 12 Harold Lane, was driving a Ford pickup truck at 9:18 p.m. when his vehicle struck the rear of a 1998 Volkswagen, Trooper Tyler Stevenson said. “(The truck) crossed the road and went off the eastern shoulder and into a big tree.”

Legere was transported to Central Maine Medical Center, where he was declared dead.

Stevenson said the truck, which did not have plates, was totaled. “It was damaged so bad I couldn’t get a VIN number last night,” he said Saturday.

The Volkswagen was driven by Glen Benedix, of 9A Harold Lane, who was born in 1969, Stevenson said.

There was little damage to the vehicle, and Benedix and his passenger, Robbie Johnson, 17, of Auburn, refused medical treatment. However, the trooper said, Benedix was arrested on a charge of operating under the influence and transported to the Oxford County Jail.

The road was wet Friday night, but that did not appear to be a factor in the accident, Stevenson said. “It’s not a particularly bad spot – I’ve had crashes there before, but it appears it was driver error more than road conditions in this case.”

“The investigation’s still open,” he said. “It appears right now that the cause of the crash was alcohol and speed related.”
