LEWISTON – A stretch of Lisbon Street may remain closed until the end of the week while city crews repair a giant sinkhole that appeared Monday night.
Throughout the day Tuesday, inbound and outbound traffic was rerouted around the Bleachery Hill section of Lisbon Street while crews made repairs.
Police said there were no major problems as a result of the road closure, but traffic on surrounding streets was backed up into the early evening.
The crater in one of the city’s busiest arteries appeared Monday night about 7 and city crews have been working on the problem since then.
By Tuesday night, police were advising commuters to find alternate routes if they typically use Lisbon Street to get in or out of the downtown area. The work may continue into Friday, police said.
