LEWISTON – It’s not too early to begin thinking about the mayor’s job, according to Larry Gilbert.

Gilbert, a former police chief and the interim head of the Franco-American Heritage Center at St. Mary’s, is testing the water for a run at the Lewiston mayor’s chair in 2007.

Incumbent Mayor Lionel Guay was elected in 2003 and reaches his term limit at the end of 2007. The mayor is limited to two, two-year terms, according to the city charter.

“I would never run against Lionel Guay,” Gilbert said. “He’s a friend, and I consider him to be a real leader. He’s very dedicated to the entire community.”

Gilbert is not sure that he’s going to run, however. He hopes to form a committee to explore a bid for mayor.

“It’s all going to depend on what the citizens of Lewiston want,” Gilbert said. “I think I’d bring my own style of leadership to the job – if the people tell me that’s what they want.”

The committee should be in place later this summer. Gilbert is taking comments and suggestions at this e-mail address: lplgilbert@aol.com
