LEWISTON – A 3-year-old girl suffered a broken leg and nose when she was backed over and dragged by a car in a parking lot late Monday afternoon, police said.

The victim, whose name was not released, was listed in stable condition at Maine Medical Center in Portland while undergoing surgery Monday night, officials said.

The driver, Melynda Bickford, 18, of 61 River St., left the scene without reporting the accident. When found by police late Monday night, she said she did not know she had hit the child, Sgt. Dan Lachance said. She was not charged.

The little girl was walking with three other children through a parking lot between Oxford and River streets when Bickford backed over the girl and then drove forward, dragging her several feet across the lot before she was released from below the car, Lachance said.

The girl was taken by her mother to Central Maine Medical Center, where it was determined both her legs had been run over, Lachance said. One leg was broken, as well as her nose, he said.

After being was stabilized, the girl was taken to the Portland hospital for additional treatment, the sergeant said.
