A recount of ballots in the Democratic primary race for Androscoggin County sheriff between Ronald Gagnon and Guy Desjardins has been ordered, according to Durham Town Clerk Shannon Plourde.

In elections June 13, Gagnon was unseated by challenger Desjardins by a 70-vote margin, 2,132 to 2,062.

Gagnon has been sheriff since 1985, and Desjardins was his chief deputy for 11 years before leaving the department Jan. 6.

The Elections Division of the Office of the Secretary of State sent a fax to the Durham town office Monday afternoon stating there would be a recount and instructing the clerk to have ballots ready to be picked up Tuesday by Maine State Police. They will be taken to Augusta, but it was not stated when they would be recounted.

A spokesperson for the Lisbon clerk’s office said the town was also told to expect a fax from the Elections Division detailing the recount. The fax had not been received by the time the office closed Monday.
