PORTLAND (AP) – Portland City Council has registered a resounding no vote against Peaks Islanders’ effort to secede from the city.

Council voted unanimously Monday night against the measure, a week after island residents voted to part ways with the city of Portland and form their own town.

Even with Monday night’s vote, the secession issue could still go before the Maine Legislature after it returns to Augusta in about six months.

The secession movement is an outgrowth of a tax revolt on the Casco Bay island, which has 900 year-round residents and about 5,000 residents during the summer.

Peaks Islanders sought to secede 11 years ago, but the proposal failed by a single vote in the state Senate.
