CANTON – An 84-year-old Canton woman died late Friday afternoon of injuries suffered when her SUV left Canton Point Road and slammed head-on into a tree, Maine State Police Trooper Daniel J. Hanson said.

Mabel Ferris was driving north within a mile from her home when the accident occurred, he said. It was reported at 3:06 p.m. to the Oxford County Regional Communications Center in Paris. She was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where she died just before 5 p.m., Hanson said.

The trooper said Ferris’ 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe left no skid marks as it went off the road, over an embankment and into the tree.

“At this point,” he said, “the cause is unknown. It appears at this point that she was not belted in.”

Ferris suffered major injuries to her legs and head and may have had a medical condition that contributed to the accident, he added.

An autopsy will be done to determine the cause of death, Hanson said.

Assisting the trooper were MSP Sgt. Don Shead Jr. Oxford County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Justin Brown, Dixfield police officer Jeff Howe, Canton Fire and Rescue and Med-Care ambulance.
