LEWISTON – The Lewiston Root Cellar will hold a progress day open house from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 1, at 89 Birch St.
Dozens of volunteers worked daily for more than two weeks to prepare the floor and hook to hook up to city water, sewer and storm drains. Volunteers installed a six-inch water main to accommodate a sprinkler system and hauled in 110 yards of sand for the floors.
They laid down two inches of foam insulation and sealed the seams, and a radiant heating system was installed. Volunteers from the neighborhood worked with businessmen and contractors.
However, there is still much more to do. Many materials and systems need to be purchased. Staff estimates they will need $150,000 to $200,000 in cash to complete the building. They have about $19,000 available. For more information, visit www.therootcellar.org.
