GREENE – Property owners will receive their tax bills this week and most will find a slight decrease from the previous year. The rate slipped to $18 per $1,000 of assessed value, half a dollar less than last year.

Town Manager Charlie Noonan gave most of the credit for the decrease to the SAD 52 school board. The district includes Greene, Leeds and Turner.

“They made some tough decisions this year to keep the overall budget to less than a 4 percent increase,” Noonan said.

Greene’s school bill for the coming fiscal year is $2.72 million, a reduction of 3.25 percent from the 2005-06 year budget, Noonan said.

Those who pay their bills by July 28 will receive a 5 percent discount. People wanting to work out a payment plan should stop by the Town Office.

Due to the Independence Day holiday, town offices and departments will be closed on July 3 and 4.
