ROCKLAND (AP) – A Lewiston man convicted of fatally stabbing a Bates College student during a 2002 street brawl pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a charge of aggravated assault for allegedly stabbing a fellow inmate at Maine State Prison.

Brandon Thongsavanh, 23, was arraigned in Knox County Superior Court. The judge set bail at $25,000 cash or $125,000 surety, even though the defendant is serving a 58-year murder sentence.

Warden Jeffrey Merrill said Thongsavanh is accused of stabbing an inmate with a knifelike device while another inmate acted as a lookout. Thongsavanh allegedly lured the inmate into his cell and stabbed him in the chest and leg.

Officials said the incident followed a dispute between the inmates, but they did not provide specifics. The wounds of the inmate, who was not identified, were not considered life-threatening.

Thongsavanh was twice convicted of murdering Morgan McDuffee during the fracas near the Lewiston campus. Thongsavanh’s first conviction was set aside on appeal when the state supreme court ruled that jurors were potentially prejudiced by an inflammatory phrase on his T-shirt.

His conviction last year is now under appeal.

Thongsavanh has been linked in the past to prison violence and was once implicated in an incident in which another prisoner’s throat was slashed, according to court documents.
