NEW YORK – Five pitchers combined on a one-hitter for the New York Yankees, and Jason Giambi homered again Friday night in a rain-delayed 2-0 victory over the suddenly slumping Mets.

Endy Chavez’s leadoff single in the sixth inning against Ron Villone (2-1) was the only hit for the Mets as the crosstown rivals opened the second leg of their annual Subway Series.

Chavez was picked off first base, and the Mets didn’t manage another baserunner.

Andy Phillips added an RBI single, sending the Mets to their fourth straight defeat. The NL East leaders hadn’t dropped three in a row all season before getting swept in Boston this week.

Orlando Hernandez (4-8) pitched seven effective innings against his former team, returning to the mound following a 63-minute delay in the fourth. Still, he lost his third consecutive outing and fell to 0-3 in three starts against the Yankees the past two seasons.

The Mets got Cliff Floyd back from the disabled list, but they were missing slugger Carlos Delgado (ribcage) and right fielder Xavier Nady (wrist) – and it showed.

Devil Rays 11, Nationals 1

WASHINGTON – Carl Crawford hit a pair of two-run homers and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays beat the Washington Nationals 11-1 Friday night.

Rocco Baldelli, Jorge Cantu and Damon Hollins also homered for Tampa Bay, which set a season high for runs and tied their season best with 17 hits. The Devil Rays finished June with a 14-13 record.

Tim Corcoran (2-0) allowed three hits in seven shutout innings in his third career start with Tampa Bay. He struck out eight and walked three, and allowed only one Nationals runner to reach third. He has allowed two runs in 15 1-3 innings this year.

Reds 9, Indians 8

CINCINNATI – Adam Dunn’s grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning off closer Bob Wickman on Friday night vaulted the Cincinnati Reds to a 9-8 victory over the Cleveland Indians, who were victimized again by a threadbare bullpen.

The Reds trailed 7-0 after seven innings, unable to get anything going against starter Paul Byrd. Then, one of the AL’s least-dependable bullpens let it get away.

Rafael Betancourt gave up Austin Kearns’ solo homer and a pinch-hit, three-run shot by Juan Castro, turning it into a game in the eighth. Eager to stop the comeback in one of the major leagues’ most homer-prone ballparks, manager Eric Wedge brought Wickman (1-4) into the game in a non-save situation in the ninth to hold a four-run lead.

Braves 5, Orioles 3

ATLANTA – Marcus Giles broke a sixth-inning tie with a two-run single and Chuck James won his second straight start as the Atlanta Braves ended a miserable June with a 5-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.

Former longtime Braves pitching coach Leo Mazzone made his first return to Atlanta since taking the same position with the Orioles in the offseason.

James, a rookie left-hander, shut out the Orioles through five innings before giving up sixth-inning homers to Jeff Conine and Corey Patterson. But James (2-0) got the win when the Braves answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Blue Jays 8, Phillies 1

TORONTO – Lyle Overbay homered twice and had five RBIs in the first two innings and the Toronto Blue Jays won their season-high fourth straight game, an 8-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night.

Overbay hit a three-run homer off Adam Bernero (0-1) in a four-run first inning, and added a two-run shot off Bernero in a four-run second.

Eric Hinske also homered for the Blue Jays, who have won seven of nine to move to 11 games above .500 (45-34).

Staked to an 8-0 lead in the second, Casey Janssen (6-6) pitched six scoreless innings, allowing five hits, while striking out three and walking three.

Tigers 7, Pirates 6

PITTSBURGH – Carlos Guillen’s two-run triple highlighted Detroit’s four-run third inning and the Tigers overcame Kenny Rogers’ shaky start to beat Pittsburgh 7-6 Friday night, the Pirates’ 14th loss in 15 games.

Curtis Granderson singled and scored to start the third, then protected a one-run lead by making an excellent leaping catch of Ronny Paulino’s line drive into the left-center gap to end the eighth with the potential tying run on third.

White Sox 6, Cubs 2

CHICAGO – Juan Uribe homered and had five RBIs as the Chicago White Sox beat the Chicago Cubs 6-2 on Friday after the two central combatants in a brawl earlier this season chatted and shook hands.

Cubs catcher Michael Barrett apparently apologized to A.J. Pierzynski in the outfield before the game and the two were seen shaking hands. Barrett punched Pierzynski in the jaw after the White Sox catcher ran him over at the plate on May 20. Barrett returned Friday from the resulting 10-game suspension.

“As far as both of us are concerned, it’s over with and hopefully we can move on,” Pierzynski told two Chicago reporters without giving details of the conversation. “It takes a man to come up and say what he said, and that’s it.”

Rangers 3, Astros 1

ARLINGTON, Texas – Mark Teixeira scored the go-ahead run after ending the longest hitless streak since the start of his career and the Texas Rangers beat the Houston Astros 3-1 on Friday night to end a season-worst five-game losing streak.

Teixeira ended an 0-for-17 stretch when he led off the seventh against Roy Oswalt (6-4) with a bloop double that dropped between center fielder Willy Taveras and second baseman Chris Burke, who collided and were shaken up on the play. Neither left the game.

After Kevin Mench was intentionally walked with one out, Ian Kinsler singled and Brad Wilkerson walked with the bases loaded on a full-count pitch. That drove in Teixeira for a 2-1 lead.

Vicente Padilla (7-5) allowed four hits over eight innings with five strikeouts and one walk. Akinori Otsuka worked the ninth for his 16th save in 18 chances. Kinsler also homered for the Rangers, who were coming off a 1-5 road trip. Mark DeRosa and Michael Young had consecutive doubles in the eighth for another run.

Twins 8, Brewers 2

MINNEAPOLIS – Justin Morneau and Torii Hunter hit back-to-back home runs, Brad Radke sailed through seven innings and the Minnesota Twins beat the Milwaukee Brewers 8-2 Friday night for their eighth straight victory.

Terry Tiffee hit a two-run homer for the surging Twins, who have won 18 of their last 20 games – including 11 straight at the Metrodome – and improved to 14-2 in interleague play. Their 28-10 mark at home is baseball’s best, and this is their second eight-game winning streak in the last three weeks.

Radke (7-7), whose stark turnaround has mirrored Minnesota’s this month, easily bested Brewers rookie Carlos Villanueva (0-1) by scattering four hits without a walk.

while striking out four. Milwaukee’s Corey Koskie doubled against his former teammate in the fourth and scored on Damian Miller’s single.

Morneau hit his 20th homer to straightaway center field on an 0-1 fastball in the second from Villanueva, who allowed six hits (all for extra bases), six runs and two walks while striking out three in five innings. Hunter went deep two pitches later, his 13th.
