Lewiston girls test their business skills

LEWISTON – Emily Payne passed out the business cards at her big family cookout on July 4.

“C & E Lemonade: Try our refreshing lemonade and rich chocolate chip cookies.”

Then she and “C” – Chantal Jordan – did a last lap around the neighborhood on Wednesday, handing out cards to people they knew.

Finally, they opened for business Thursday, for four hours, the intended lifespan of C & E Lemonade.

The girls knew the location wouldn’t attract too much attention – the very last house on dead-end Morningside Street – so they hoped the cards worked. They’d made them through the American Girl Dolls’ Web site.

Emily’s mother, Ann Marie Payne, made the star attractions. An hour into it, with $12 in sales, cookies outpaced lemonade.

The girls intended to split the money, keeping half for themselves and giving half to charity. Chantal’s choice: Mercy Works, a charity through her church, Vineyard Christian Fellowship. Emily’s pick: Holly Cross Church, where her family attends.

“I like helping, that’s one of the places we donate to,” Emily said.

Sitting in chairs behind two tables, Emily, 9, and Chantal, 10, hoped for trash people and maybe a mailman to wander by.

Emily’s great-aunt, Terri Dion, pulled up for a lemonade and two cookies, to go. The girls had sandwich bags ready for that very thing.

“That’s my little darling, Emily,” Dion said.
