Keegan Fennessy finally made some birdies – four of them – Tuesday at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Tournament in Bremerton, Washington.

He also, unfortunately for him, made two triple-bogey 7s and a double-bogey 6 en route to a 9-over-par 81 at the Gold Mountain Golf Club.

Fennessy, a Poland High School graduate from Minot, finished his run at the tournament with a combined score of 165, good for a tie for 149th out of 155 golfers in the national event.

Like his first round Monday, Fennessy started slowly, carding a double-bogey on the par-4 first hole. He managed a birdie on the par-5 sixth hole to drop back to 2-over on the day, but a triple-bogey seven on the par-4 seventh dropped Fennessy back to plus-5.

On the back, Fennessy started with two more birdies, but quickly gave the strokes back at No. 13 with another triple-bogey seven. A back-nine 39 was Fennessy’s first nine under 40.

The cut for this year’s event fell at plus-6 for the two-day stroke play portion. The tournament now switches to match-play, the brackets determined by the order of finish over the first two days.
