S. P. Carey and son of East Brunswick expect to have 1000 boxes from their strawberry beds this season. They began gathering the berries July 3 and have been picking 100 quarts a day. They sell all their berries at wholesale and are unable to supply to demand.

Two muskrats in the bog near Stetson street, Auburn, on the Lake Grove line of trolley cars, attract considerable attention from passengers. Conductors and motormen say that hardly a day passes but that muskrats get out on the bank and sun themselves.

50 Years Ago, 1956

Congress has passed and President Eisenhower is expected to sign a law which permits juries to recommend the death penalty for any individual who gives or sells heroin to children under 18 years of age. In addition, the measure stiffens penalties for other narcotics law violations. It should be noted that the death penalty is not mandatory and would apply only in states which have capitol punishment.

Just another day to many folks. A bad luck omen to many others. Friday the 13th. Superstitious folks everywhere will be walking on thin ice.

25 Years Ago, 1981

Property covenants barring unmarried couples from purchasing homes together are valid because “such relationships are simple, illegitimate unions,” a Maryland appeals court says. The Maryland Court of Special Appeals has upheld a covenant in Greenbelt restricting home ownership to married couples. The state’s second highest court ruled the covenant does not violate state laws barring discrimination on the basis of marital status. The rule was challenged by the Prince Georges County Human Relations Commission on behalf of John Hemphill and Lynn Bradley, who were not allowed to buy a home in Greenbelt, one of the nation’s oldest planned communities.
