PORTLAND (AP) – The Rev. Jerry Falwell has canceled a visit to Maine next week because of health concerns.

Falwell, 72, was scheduled to preach on Peaks Island, but members of his staff said they did not realize that he would be a 20-minute boat ride from the closest medical facilities. Falwell suffers from heart problems.

His expected appearance at the Peaks Island Baptist Church’s two-year anniversary next Tuesday had not gone unnoticed by others on the island. Some expressed concerns over Falwell’s past comments about gays, Muslims and other groups.

Ronald Godwin, president of Jerry Falwell Ministries, said the controversy had nothing to do with Falwell’s decision. “That probably wouldn’t affect him at all,” he said. “He has some controversy anywhere he goes.”

Beau Boyle, pastor of the Peaks Island Baptist Church, said Falwell’s cancellation is not surprising, given his health issues. “We’re just getting on our knees and praying for a complete and speedy recovery,” he said.
