FARMINGTON – A University of Maine at Farmington student was arrested Tuesday on two charges, one after a classmate recognized his face from the state Sex Offenders Registry.

The man, Robin Hutchinson, 33, was initially arrested for driving a motor vehicle as an habitual offender.

Hutchinson wasn’t driving a car, said arresting officer Ted Blais, who is UMF’s director of public safety. But he had allegedly been driving an all-terrain vehicle regularly from his West Farmington home to a psychology class on campus.

After the driving arrest, Blais said Hutchinson was again brought to his attention when a student in the psychology class recognized Hutchinson’s face from the photos of sex offenders posted outside the campus police office.

Offenders are required to notify police whenever they start school or a new job. Hutchinson had not notified campus police, Blais said.

He was charged with failing to register with the campus police as a UMF student with a sex crime in his past.

Hutchinson was convicted of gross sexual assault in 1999.
