HAMDEN, Conn. (AP) – Animal control officers in Hamden discovered five dead dogs in a house over the weekend.
Six more dogs were found alive but severely neglected, officials said. Most of the dogs were Chihuahuas.
Dog Warden Jean Murray called it one of the worst cases of animal mistreatment she’s ever seen.
“Two of the Chihuahuas were sleeping on top of the dead ones,” Murray told the New Haven Register. “Lord knows when these dogs last had water.”
There was also a German Shepherd mix and cocker spaniel-lab mix.
The animals were found Saturday in a house littered with trash. The dogs that survived were taken to the Hamden animal shelter. The owner was not home at the time.
“They’re all nice little dogs,” Murray said. “Not aggressive at all.”
Hamden police on Sunday said they had had no report of any arrest but that that animal control officers were still investigating.
