PORTSMOUTH, N.H.(AP) – Education officials in Portsmouth are considering revamping search and seizure policies to allow drug dog searches on school grounds.

A draft of the new policy is set to be discussed at a meeting of school district officials next month. It also would authorize the superintendent, principals and teachers to detain students suspected of possessing banned substances at and on the way to school and school-sponsored events.

Claire Ebel, Executive Director of the New Hampshire Civil Liberties Union, confirms her group is taking a look at the draft.

Kathleen Dwyer, the district’s lawyer, says the proposed changes are meant to keep children safe while they are at school.
