Here’s a creative tip from FamilyFun’s “My Great Idea” book ($16.95):
It took less than two hours for the Willemses of Brookline, Mass., to create a compact mudroom in a laundry area just beyond their front door.
A prefinished solid-wood shelving unit is anchored to a stud in the wall, with shelves placed strategically to serve as storage and seating (the seats are braced with sturdy L brackets). Hooks are mounted along horizontal wood strips to catch coats and hats. See-through boxes, clearly labeled, keep sunglasses, library books, and spare change tidy; wicker baskets store foul-weather gear and out-of-season sports equipment; and shoes and boots slide under the bottom shelf.
