Lewiston Public Library. One of the objects of interest to the visitors of this city is the public library which is so conveniently located on Pine and Park streets.

This library was made possible by the gift of $50,000 from Andrew Carnegie, the gift being made upon the request of Senator William P. Frye. As a matter of fact the building cost considerably more than $50,000. The building commission felt the need of more money, and when Senator Frye informed Mr. Carnegie of the fact he promptly and willingly added quite an amount to his original present.

50 Years Ago, 1956

• MOSCOW – The Soviet government this year has issued more than 2,500 tourist visas to Americans. The number of Americans visiting the Soviet Union is at its highest point since the mid-30s when Leningrad was a point of call on some North Cape cruises. Tonight there were 300 transient U.S. citizens in this city alone. Scores of others are in other parts of the country.

• The largest veterans training program the world has ever known ends today for all except a handful of veterans. The 12-year-old World War II GI Bill has given more than 7,800,000 World War II veterans a chance to catch up with the years taken out of their lives by military service. In Maine, more than 38,700 veterans trained under the GI Bill, according to M.L. Stoddard, manager of the VA’s center at Togus.

BAR HARBOR – The British union jack flew from a local hotel and a four-masted sailing ship fired its cannons three times to salute the mammoth ocean liner Queen Elizabeth 2 as it lay at anchor for the first time in Maine waters Thursday.

At least 3,000 spectators crowded into this seaside resort town to catch a glimpse of the QE2, which is longer than three football fields and 17 stories tall, and cars clogged local streets most of the day.
