This is the time of year when the icebox adds to the worries of the average housekeeper, and in the face of a threatened advance in the price of ice the question of the best way to economize is urgent. Almost every housekeeper owns an ice box of some kind but very few understand the science of running it to the best advantage. It’s a mistake to suppose that an ice box must be set in a cool place, because the box does not absorb heat from the outside if properly made. It is only when the box is not absolutely air tight or is too frequently opened that it is affected by being kept in a place where the air is warm. In other words, if it is not a good box you must keep it in a cool place to help it along, as it cannot do its work without coddling.

50 Years Ago, 1956

Six hundred youngsters from seven Auburn playgrounds attended the annual “Play Day Jamboree” at East Auburn Playground under the sponsorship of the Auburn Recreation Department. The youngsters, who rode to the site of the affair in school buses, enjoyed a full day of activities which included all sorts of games, races, and plenty of swimming. Fifteen Auburn playground directors attended the affair to assist in supervising the activities. One of the centers of attractions was a junior sized midway with such games as a basketball throw, pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey, a marble toss and a grab-bag.

25 Years Ago, 1981

Two annual million dollar search missions have failed to locate the hidden sunken luxury liner Titanic, but the moneyman who backed the expeditions said he’ll probably try again. Scientists, adventurers and other treasure-hunters on the 174-foot research vessel “Gyre” said they want to return to the North Atlantic for what has become a compulsive mission for some of them.
