BANGOR (AP) – An inmate at the Penobscot County Jail in Bangor took his own life early Thursday, the county sheriff said. It was the fourth inmate suicide at the jail since 2002.

Mark Howard, 46, of Eddington, hanged himself by jumping over a second-floor railing while tied to a sheet, Sheriff Glenn Ross said. An attempt to revive Howard failed.

Howard was being held in lieu of $250 bail after being arrested on a drunken driving charge.

A corrections officer spoke to Howard during the night and allowed him to go to the bathroom, Ross said. When the officer returned 15 minutes later, he found that Howard had hanged himself.

While four inmates have committed suicide at the county jail since 2002, there have also been 30 serious attempts during that time frame, Ross said.
