LEWISTON – An 18-month-old girl remained at a Portland hospital Friday three days after she apparently choked while taking a bath at her Pleasant View Acres home.
Police were investigating the Tuesday night incident during which the girl, Kiana Bade, stopped breathing and was for a time believed to be dead.
The toddler was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland where she remained in serious condition Friday night, a nursing supervisor said. A neighbor, who did not give her name, said the girl’s mother has remained at the hospital with her daughter since Tuesday.
How the girl stopped breathing was not completely clear, Sgt. Mark Cornelio said Friday. She was said to have been taking a bath early Tuesday night when she began to choke.
The man who was caring for the girl told police she may have been eating chicken at the time and that she started to choke when he momentarily looked away, police said.
