AUBURN – Police say a wanted Auburn man led them on a short foot chase through New Auburn Saturday afternoon, before he tried hiding under a van and was captured.

Derek Demers, 24, was wanted on six outstanding warrants, including failure to appear in court on a drug charge and multiple failures to pay fines for traffic violations, according to police. Auburn police had been looking for Demers for weeks but he “managed to slip through our fingers two or three times recently,” Lt. Tim Cougle said.

On Saturday afternoon, a police informant told Cougle that Demers had returned to his Third Street apartment. When police arrived, Cougle said, Demers was in the middle of a domestic dispute with his girlfriend.

Demers fled, running barefoot through New Auburn, according to police. Officers Ben Quinell and Adam Martin found him hiding under a van several streets away from his apartment.

Demers was arrested and is being held in the Androscoggin County Jail.
