WESTBROOK – The Maine Credit Union League recently honored six Maine credit unions at a ceremony announcing the 2006 recipients of the Dora Maxwell Awards for Social Responsibility and the Louise Herring Philosophy In Action Awards.

Professionals from the Maine Public Relations Council judged the awards, which honor credit unions for community and/or member service efforts and come on the heels of the Maine credit union movement’s most successful and significant year ever for community service and fundraising.

The 2006 recipients of the Dora Maxwell Award for Social Responsibility, established to encourage credit union involvement in community projects and activities, are:

Assets of $50-100 million: first place to Maine Family Federal Credit Union, Lewiston and second place to Ste. Croix Regional Federal Credit Union, Lewiston.

Assets of $100-200 million: First place to Ocean Communities Federal Credit Union, Biddeford; second place to Atlantic Regional Federal Credit Union, Brunswick and an honorable mention to University Credit Union, Orono.

The 2006 recipients of the Louise Herring Award for Philosophy In Action, which formally recognizes credit unions that demonstrate in an extraordinary way the practical application of the credit union philosophy, are:

Assets of less than $100 million: first place to Maine Family Federal Credit Union, Lewiston and second place to Ste. Croix Regional FCU, Lewiston.

Assets of greater than $100 million: first place went to University Credit Union, Orono and second place to the Five County Credit Union in Bath.

The winners in each asset category will go on to compete in the national awards program in the fall. A Maine credit union has received a first or second place award in the national competition in five out of the past six years.
