Mike McCollum is the new head swimming coach at Bates College, school officials announced Tuesday.

McCollum, who has been an assistant at Bates for two years, assumes the head position on an interim basis, taking over for retiring coach Dana Mulholland.

Mulholland, who stepped aside after 18 years at the helm of the swimming program, is the Associate Director of Athletics at Bates, and is also serving as Interim Director of Athletics.

McCollum is a 1997 graduate of Middlebury, where he was an eight-time NCAA Division III All-American.

Prior to coaching at Bates, McCollum was a head coach at Hamilton (Ohio) High School and at SUNY-Fredonia, and an assistant at Norwich University and at the College of William and Mary.

“Mike has a passion for swimming,” Mulholland said in a release Tuesday. “He is an excellent technical coach, a good judge of talent and character and he will be a great recruiter.”
