The River Views column published on Tuesday’s B1 under the byline of freelance writer David Sargent did not provide attribution or credit to author Douglas Hodgkin, who researched and compiled Chapter 7 of the book “Androscoggin County, Maine: A Pictorial Sesquicentennial History, 1854-2004,” edited by Michael C. Lord and W. Dennis Stires and published by the Androscoggin Historical Society in 2003.

Much of the column contained exact quotes from the chapter as well as paraphrasing that was the work of Hodgkin and his editors, not Sargent’s.

The Sun Journal and writer Sargent apologize to those involved with publishing the book and to our readers for any misrepresentation.

Mr. Hodgkin “has done a great deal of valuable research and writing about Lewiston’s history, and I apologize to him and readers for my failure to make that attribution and also state that the information appears in the sesquicentennial publication of the Androscoggin Historical Society,” Sargent said.

The Sun Journal assures readers that anyone writing for the Sun Journal or its publications is being strongly reminded of the importance of attribution and credit where it is due.

Sargent, a veteran writer here at the Sun Journal, admits his haste in writing caused him to overlook important rules writers must follow when including research and others’ views in their work.
