wilton – A fireworks display at the annual Wilton Blueberry Festival created a brief scare on Saturday when a rocket misfired.

“The fireworks rocket went off prematurely, shooting sideways instead of upward,” Wilton police Chief Sonny Dunham explained Sunday evening.

The rocket flew 350 feet across Wilson Lake before coming into contact with a bridge. Fragments of the shell, mostly cardboard and other light-weight materials, ricocheted into a nearby crowd of onlookers.

None of the spectators were seriously injured and the fireworks show went on as planned.

Dunham warned that fireworks are dangerous and pointed out that “accidents like this one are not uncommon at fireworks displays.”
