Smokers are going up. This refers to the price and not only are cigars increasing in cost to a very considerable extent, but chewing tobacco and all other forms of the fragrant weed are becoming daily more expensive. The raise in price is due primarily to a shortage in the last crop. The consumption of tobacco has been steadily on the gain year after year, the growth of the plant has scarcely kept pace with demand, which has actually led to higher prices for equal grades.

50 Years Ago, 1956

Two Italian Embassy officials will tour Lewiston as part of a quick swing through Maine aimed at increasing trade between this State and Italy. Following the tour of Portland, Alde Morente, commercial counselor, and Guide Calef, trade adviser, will be met at the Lewiston interchange of the Maine Turnpike. They will be greeted by Lewiston Industrial Development Director Ernest Saunders Jr., William P. Tewhey, executive vice president of the Lewiston Chamber of Commerce, and other city officials. The long-range objective is to promote trade with other countries through the port of Portland and to encourage them to look favorably on Maine if their country decides to put up an assembly plant or other industry in this country.

25 Years Ago, 1981

The first tenant for the novel Auburn-Lewiston Industrial Airpark was welcomed at special ground-breaking ceremonies for a new building. The first structure at the airpark, which is located on land adjacent to the Twin City airport in Auburn, is a speculative building which is vacant at this time. Eastern Fire Protection Co. Lewiston is the first tenant at the airpark. Its 23,000 square foot building will be on site for assembly and ready for occupancy near the end of November. Eastern had outgrown its Lewiston quarters.
