SABATTUS – High water levels and resulting erosion problems were the focus of the Sabattus Lake Dam Commission meeting Monday.

More than 35 people showed up for the meeting complaining about high water levels and that it was causing their lakeside properties to wash out.

Selectmen and commission Chairman Steve Wood said the commission voted to remove the flashboard from the spillway. That was done Tuesday.

“This is being done about two months earlier than usual,” Wood said. He said this process lowers the water level by approximately 8 inches, which should help remedy the problem and reduce surface-water algae.

Bob Boulette, a lakeshore property owner, was nominated to fill a vacancy on the commission.

“I want to keep the clarity of the lake at a good level,” he said.

Boulette was responsible for rallying residents to attend Monday’s meeting. He will be officially sworn in as a commission member later this week.

The next Sabattus Pond Dam Commission meeting is scheduled for Oct. 2.
