BEDFORD, N.H. (AP) – A woman turned herself in to the police Wednesday in the shocking case of a family caught on videotape while shoplifting, but legal technicalities kept police from immediately arresting her.

Police Chief David Bailey said the woman, whom he declined to identify, came to the police station after the video was widely broadcast, but left because there was no sworn warrant for her arrest. She promised to return when one was prepared, which Bailey said could happen by the end of the day.

The video, taken Aug. 2 at a store called the Consignment Gallery, shows two young children sneaking around a display case and grabbing jewelry. The woman, believed to be their mother, directs the children to take the items.

An older woman also was caught on tape stuffing items down her shirt. Investigators say they are searching for her. They say they have not confirmed whether the older woman is the children’s grandmother.

The woman who spoke with police on Wednesday said she lives in the area and has four children, one age 14 and three under 10, Bailey said. All are believed to have been involved, he said.

Police said they started getting tips minutes after the tape first aired on local television Tuesday evening. “It’s pretty upsetting to watch,” Detective Matt Fleming said. “Watching the children methodically move through that jewelry area and take the items out for the mother is just astonishing.”

He said more than $2,000 in jewelry was stolen.
