AUBURN – A pregnant woman was critically injured and another was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a crash Wednesday after an accident on Washington Street.

Heather Fugere, 18, of Oxford, was listed in critical condition Wednesday night at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with multiple injuries. Police said Fugere is pregnant, but weren’t certain how many months along she is. Hospital workers wouldn’t comment on the status of the pregnancy.

Police said Fugere lost control of her car when another vehicle cut in front of her on Washington Street near Hackett Road.

Fugere’s car struck a Central Maine Power Co. pole and then rolled several times before coming to rest on the roof at the side of the road, police said.

Minutes after the crash, police stopped a car driven by Amber Belanger, 18, of Bartlett Street in Lewiston, and arrested her on a charge of leaving the scene of the crash.

Police said Belanger had been driving north on Washington Street when she quickly turned right onto Hackett Road, causing Fugere to swerve behind her. Belanger watched as Fugere’s Hyundai rolled several times and then she drove away from the scene, police said.

Witnesses described Belanger’s 1993 Volkswagen to police and that car was stopped soon after by Lewiston police. Belanger was arrested and taken to the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn. At about 6:15 p.m., she was freed on $1,500 cash bail, according to a jail official.

Police said Fugere suffered broken bones and other injuries in the crash.
