CANTON – The owner of Almighty Waste in Auburn briefed selectmen Thursday night on options for waste disposal.

Selectman Donald Hutchins said the truck used to transport waste to Jay is in very bad condition, and drivers have to make two runs because it is small.

Almighty Waste owner Scott Ferland of Poland explained how a compactor would save the town considerable money, but the company does not have a used one for sale.

The board asked the company to locate one the town could buy.

The other option would be to purchase a new truck.

The board will weigh the cost of buying the compactor and having Almighty Waste do the transport. The company will bring a report to the next selectmen’s meeting.

Selectmen signed an agreement with the Canton Hi Riders Snowmobile Club to lease an acre of land with a steel building to store equipment. The former Keith property is on Route 140. The land has access to snowmobile trails.

Sue Gammon of the Conservation Park Committee requested the town hold a public hearing on developing trails and a park system the committee is developing in the village.

Due to repeated flooding of the village by the Androscoggin River, the town is relocating homes and government buildings from there.

Gammon said she has submitted requests to the National Park Service, which will offer help in conservation management of the land. The town has to decide if it wants the land for agricultural use and open space. The public hearing was scheduled for 6 p.m. Sept. 12 in the municipal building.

At the same meeting, the board will be asking what the town wants to do with the school building in the village. The recreation committee wants to move the playground equipment from the rear of the building to adjoining open space, but the town first needs to decide what to do with the building.
