FARMINGTON – Selectman Mark Cayer announced his resignation Tuesday night during a regularly scheduled selectmen’s meeting.

In the second year of his second three-year term, Cayer, 41, said Thursday that he resigned because he plans to move out of town by the end of the month.

“My wife got a new job, my kids are headed into the Air Force,” he said. “I resigned for professional reasons, and to be closer to my family.”

Cayer’s last day as selectman will be Aug. 31, Town Manager Richard Davis said Wednesday. Selectmen haven’t decided how to fill Cayer’s position, Davis added, saying the board can appoint whoever they want. The issue will be discussed at their next meeting, he said.

“I am disappointed,” Cayer said of his resignation. “Every person (on the board) has so much diplomacy during meetings. I think we’re an excellent working group.”
