JAY – A Thursday morning fire in a hot oil system at Verso Paper’s Androscoggin Mill, formerly International Paper, has temporarily idled paper machine No. 4, which makes coated paper.
No one was injured. The fire was out in less than a half-hour, mill spokesman Bill Cohen said Thursday.
It was a “great response” by the mill’s internal fire brigade and the Jay Fire Rescue Department, he said.
The cause of the fire in the oil system, which is located beneath the floor the paper machine sits on, remains under investigation by the mill’s fire team, he said. Some of the machine’s controls and electronic systems are located in the same area below the floor.
The fire occurred just after 10 a.m. and was in a confined area but there was a fair amount of smoke, Cohen said.
Workers were evacuated from one section of the mill around the No. 4 machine and the shipping area, he said.
Mill officials don’t believe the machine will be down for an extended period of time, Cohen said.
Employees who work on the machine will be given jobs elsewhere in the mill, he added.
Cohen did not have an estimate of damage.
