Poland residents have heard, both via the news media and at the board of selectmen’s meeting held on July 18, an admission of responsibility by the town manager for the $2.7 million deficit. When specifically asked by a board member, he also admitted that he did not tell the town attorney of this potential problem either, so residents went to town meeting with no financials.
After this clear dereliction of duty, for him to still feel justified in continuing as town manager is amazing. Why is the board not outraged?
If they were not informed because it was thought by the manager that the problem could be fixed before it was discovered, how egotistical, inappropriate and incredulous is that?
The review of the town manager was postponed in January or February. Now that he is back full-time, why is it not being conducted ASAP? Town residents need to ensure that those we choose to represent us are the best people possible for the job.
We now have an assistant town manager, despite townspeople voting down funding for that position. Are we even listened to? Whatever happened to cuts in spending? We’re told a special meeting will be held at the end of August for questions on all of this. We will also be informed then of the mill rate for this year’s taxes.
If residents care about this town and where it’s heading, they can’t remain uninvolved any longer. Each can help make a difference.
