EAST LYME, Conn. (AP) – New London football coach Jack Cochran was charged with breach of peace on Saturday after an argument with another coach at a weight-lifting event.
Jack Cochran allegedly punched Fitch coach James Buonocore Jr. in the mouth as the argument escalated, The Day of New London reported in a story prepared for Sunday editions.
Members of both teams were taking part in the Eastern Connecticut Athletic Conference’s annual weightlifting competition at East Lyme High School. Police were called to the high school just after 11:30 a.m. for a report of a disturbance.
The argument apparently began inside the weight room and continued outside where Buonocore was allegedly struck.
The 40-year-old Cochran was released on a promise to appear in New London Superior Court on Aug. 17.
Christopher Clouet, superintendent of New London Schools, acknowledged that Cochran and Buonocore have bickered in the past.
“This has to stop,” Clouet said. “Monday the principal, athletic director and I will meet. We’ll discuss any sanctions and what steps need to be taken next.”
New London is scheduled to play at Fitch on Oct. 6.
