Rotary speaker

LEWISTON – Members of the Lewiston-Auburn Rotary Club will hear a presentation by Larry Marcoux, director of community impact for the United Way of Androscoggin County, at noon Thursday, Aug. 17, at the Ramada Inn. Marcoux will introduce members to Maine’s 2-1-1 information telephone service.

A native of Lewiston-Auburn and graduate of the University of Southern Maine with a bachelor’s degree in social studies and a master’s degree in public policy and management, Marcoux taught history at Lewiston High School for 15 years, was formerly director of the Lewiston-Auburn Area Council on Transition and is a member and past president of the Auburn-Lewiston Rotary Club.

2-1-1 is an easy-to-remember telephone number that connects people to a full range of non-emergency health and social services in our community. It is accessible to all Maine residents 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Anyone wishing to hear the speaker or to learn more about Rotary is welcome to attend. Weekly buffet luncheons are $8 a person. Access the club’s Web site at www.lewistonauburnrotary.org for more information.

Women’s screenings

LEWISTON – Women’s Health Associates at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center is partnering with the American Cancer Society and the Maine Breast and Cervical Health Program to offer free health screenings to uninsured women on Friday, Aug. 25.

The screening will include a breast examination, pelvic examination, Pap test, mammogram and limited diagnostic or follow-up services.

To qualify for the free program women must be age 50 or older, have no insurance, have insurance that does not cover mammograms or Pap tests or have a high deductible or co-insurance and meet certain income guidelines.

Women can call 1-800-350-5180 and press 1 to find out if they qualify. Deaf and hard-of-hearing women can call TTY 1-800-438-5514. Staff will help them enroll in the program and schedule an appointment.

Seniors meeting

SABATTUS – After an abbreviated meeting of the Sabattus Senior Citizens, called by President Stan Pelletier, attention was called to the Aug. 3 outing.

With the help of volunteers, 87 members participated in the outing, which included lobsters, clams, corn, hot dogs and hamburgers, desserts and refreshments. Bingo and baseball games was played in Maxwell-Gill Hall.

On Sept. 7 members are invited to attend a field trip to a Chinese restaurant on Center Street, Auburn. For more information, call Bob at 783-6955. After lunch members will return to Maxwell-Gill Hall for a meeting and bingo. Lemonade, iced tea and cookies will be served.

Bridge winners

NEW GLOUCESTER – The New Gloucester Bridge Club met Aug. 13 at the Masonic Building where Howell movement game was played.

Finishing first in Flight A were Janet and Vern Arey; second, Al Schindler and Renee Mitchell; third, Darcy Page and Arnold Selig.

Finishing first in Flight B were Richard Balian and Nick Karamessinis; second, Sally Johnston and Pat Schlegel. There will be another game Aug. 20. A partner is guaranteed. For information, call Les Buzzell at 783-4153. There will no game Labor Day weekend.
