The celebration of Labor Day at Rumford Falls, under the auspices of the International Brotherhood of Paper Makers, local No. 9, promises from the program to be one of the most elaborate events yet held in the Paper City. The various unions at Livermore Falls have accepted invitations to be present, and invitations have been extended to the unions of Mechanic Falls and Lisbon Falls.

Several hundred spectators are expected to be on hand tonight at Pettingill Park when the Second Battalion of the 163rd Regimental Combat Team, Maine National Guard, holds its third annual retreat ceremony.
Nine trophies will be presented at the evening review for performance and achievement the past year and at the recent Camp Drum summer encampment. Taking part are Headquarters E and G Companies of Lewiston, F Company of Auburn and H Company of Norway.
Highlighting the display will be a 47-ton M-47 “Patton” tank from the Portland tank company. The tank is expected to rumble into Auburn around noon.

The infants born in the post-war baby boom of the late 40s and early 50s have come of age.
In this decade, the percentage of households in the prime home-buying age group is expected to become the largest segment of the nation’s population.
Though demand for new homes among these 25- to 34- year-olds is expected to keep pace with new household formulations, high interest rates on new mortgages coupled with soaring new home costs are putting a damper on the home-building industry’s ability to cope with the demand.
As a result, may of these prospective new-home buyers are turning to the nation’s stock of existing housing. They are retrofitting many older, but essentially sound houses into modern, comfortable homes.
