AUGUSTA (AP) – Dozens of veterans and supporters gathered in the Hall of Flags of the Maine State House Monday for the dedication of a World War II plaque.

The timing was deliberate. It was on August 14th, 1945, that President Truman announced that Japan had surrendered unconditionally, ending World War II.

Speakers at the ceremony included Governor Baldacci, Rep. Michael Michaud and representatives of Sen. Olympia Snowe, Sen. Susan Collins and Rep. Tom Allen.
