NORWAY – Albert E. Nelson Sr., 77, a lifelong resident of Stoneham, died Monday, Aug. 14, at Stephens Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on Sept. 21, 1928, in Waterford, a son of Stanwood and Maude Learned Nelson. He attended Stoneham schools and Bridgton Academy. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1948, and served in the Air Corps in Panama.

On Feb. 22, 1950, he married Eleanor Files, also of Stoneham. They lived in Lovell for a short time, where he worked at Gerry’s Mill. They later moved to Melrose, Mass., where he worked delivering fuel for Benson-Goss Fuel Co. In 1961, he and Eleanor returned to Stoneham to raise their family. He went to work for Dwight Grover at Grover Lumber Co. and then A.C. Lawrence Co., from which he retired in 1984.

In addition to his full-time jobs, he also worked building stone walls, paving driveways, caretaking and carrying on the family tradition of cemetery work. During his retirement, he enjoyed selling firewood. He was a member of the Stoneham Volunteer Fire Department and the Stoneham Knight Riders Snowmobile Club. He enjoyed snowmobiling, family gatherings, especially his annual lobster feeds, his camp in Wilsons Mills, hunting as a young man, time spent with his children and grandchildren and the company of his dogs over the years.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Eleanor of Stoneham; four children, Sharon Berman and her husband, Howard, of Belmont, Mass., Cheryl Barnard and her husband, Paul, of Seaford, Va., Albert Nelson Jr. and his fiancée, Cathy Beaudoin, of Stoneham and Dale Nelson and his wife, Kitty, of Lovell; a sister, Geneva Tripp of Stoneham; 10 grandchildren, Aisha, Jaffer and Nawal Traish, Joshua, Jenna and Lindsey Barnard, Eric and Troy Nelson and Molly and Matthew Nelson; and an aunt, Christine Nelson of Winslow.

He was predeceased by his parents; and a sister, Carolyn Heino.
